During mid-March 2025, the Gaza Strip witnessed continued shelling incidents amidst restrictions on the movement of goods and aid through the crossings. These developments coincided with the stalling of ceasefire understandings and growing fears of an escalation in military operations.
Humanitarian repercussions
When security risks coincide with disruptions to food supplies, families find it more difficult to obtain basic necessities, and the most vulnerable groups, especially children and the sick, become more susceptible to a deterioration in their daily conditions.
Rights and legal protection
International humanitarian law requires respect for the protection of civilians and the facilitation of humanitarian relief in accordance with applicable legal conditions. It also prohibits the use of starvation as a method of warfare against civilians.
Protection and monitoring methods
The response requires providing reliable relief corridors, protecting civilians’ access to food and medical treatment, and independently investigating attacks that resulted in casualties.
