Airstrikes target the vicinity of a major hospital

The area surrounding the Gaza European Hospital, southeast of Khan Younis, was subjected to intense airstrikes on May 13, 2025, the effects of which continued into the following day. According to published reports, the strikes caused deaths, injuries, and extensive damage to the hospital’s facilities, impacting its ability to provide services.

The impact of the hospital closure on patients

Residents of southern Gaza rely on the remaining hospitals for emergency care, surgery, and specialized treatment. The disruption of one of these facilities means increased pressure on the others, and patients and the wounded may be forced to travel longer distances under difficult conditions and with limited medical transport.

Due protection of health facilities

Medical units do not automatically lose their protection simply because fighting is taking place nearby. The principles of distinction, proportionality, and precautions must be observed during attacks, with particular attention paid to the protection of patients, staff, and facilities providing care.

Response requirements

The area requires a rapid damage assessment and the rehabilitation of usable sections, along with securing medical supplies and fuel. The results of the bombing must also be documented and investigated to ensure that what happened is known.
