The killing of Palestinian journalist Mohammed Wishah, a correspondent for Al Jazeera Mubasher, in the Gaza Strip, has once again highlighted the dangers faced by journalists during armed conflicts, and the need to investigate incidents involving journalists and hold those responsible for violations accountable.
Targeting incident
The attack occurred on Wednesday evening, April 8, 2026, near the Nabulsi roundabout on Rashid Street, west of Gaza City. Details published about the incident indicate that a missile was fired from a drone at a civilian vehicle carrying 40-year-old Mohammed Samir Mohammed Washah, resulting in his death, the vehicle catching fire, and injuries to seven passersby.
Weshah was working as a reporter for Al Jazeera Mubasher. The incident raises concerns that go beyond the loss of a single journalist, as threats against media workers limit the ability of the population to communicate their experiences to the public and weaken independent documentation of the war’s humanitarian impact.
The right to protection during journalistic work
Civilian journalists enjoy the protection afforded to civilians under international humanitarian law, unless and for the duration of their direct participation in hostilities. Carrying a camera or covering events in the conflict does not negate this protection. The rules of distinction, proportionality, and due process of attack also remain applicable to military operations.
The importance of investigation and accountability
Investigations into the killing of journalists necessitate gathering evidence regarding the circumstances of the attack, examining the identities of those involved, the location, timing, and weapons used, and assessing whether international law was violated. Transparency in the findings and access to redress for victims’ families are essential to preventing impunity.
Protecting press freedom in conflict zones is not just a professional issue for journalists, but is also related to the public’s right to access information and the need for witnesses capable of documenting the impact of violence on civilians.
